09 Oct Surgical Team Arrives After 3 Year Hiatus
During the first week of September, we were able to host our first surgical team since the Fall of 2019. There were 10 participants who were able to perform 22 much needed surgeries. There were numerous challenges we haven’t faced before such as resistance from Customs to release their equipment and medications. We also experienced our first ever need for our emergency evacuation insurance, which worked wonderfully for the individual who fell and fractured their hip and hand. Additionally, the public hospital where we serve is in the worst condition in the history of our relationship with them with supply shortages and no funding. Despite the challenges, this team endured the hardships and accomplished so much. Knowing that the patients they served had been waiting for as long as four years for surgery made the challenges worthwhile. The tearful thank-you’s reflected the depth of gratitude of the patients and their families. Can you imagine waiting four years for a much-needed hysterectomy or gall bladder removal? We are excited to be hosting surgical teams again and invite you (if you have OR experience) to contact Donna Waldron at [email protected] to inquire about how you might get involved.
