Project Moses Service Opportunity

Project Moses Service Opportunity

We don’t always recognize how great an impact one act of service can have. We first met Oscar through the DESEO Program which led to his attendance at the Barrio Belen church. Normally we focus our Project Moses recruitment on remote villages in target areas that don’t have direct access to post-primary school, but in getting to know Oscar, he was highlighted as a good candidate and was invited to apply—an answer to prayer for his family. His mother has now recently started attending the Barrio Belen church regularly as well. One Sunday Donna was taking his mom home from church and she had to push through the overgrown brush to get to the hardly noticeable footpath that led up the hillside to their home. With her only son Oscar being away at the Project, such things have fallen to the wayside. On mentioning the situation to Tyler, they coordinated the young men of the Project with Oscar to serve by landscaping the area. Upon being told that they would be going to help at his house, Oscar was visibly touched by the offer and excited to receive help in caring for his mother, now living alone. Loaded with machetes and a weed-wacker, they set to work with Oscar directing in order to get the project done. With 10 sets of hands and 45 minutes they were able to do so much for Oscar’s mom—something that would normally be a long day’s effort for their family. The boys were happy to step into their classmate’s life that way, and Oscar and his mother were so grateful for the support.

Our leadership team was able to visit the boys in their homes in May where they were welcomed so warmly by their families, and being able to serve them directly in another way like this together with the boys was an important experience and one we hope to replicate more.
