Project Moses Updates

-STEM Club Robotics Competition

November 19th was the culmination of a weekly STEM Club at Project Moses. The boys would spend their time designing, assembling, and programming a Lego robot each Wednesday for two hours for the past four months. At the start, none of the boys had ever built with Legos or followed design instructions to create something on their own, let alone had any experience programming on a computer. This is why the result was so impressive to all who attended their presentation on Tuesday.

They were divided into two teams and were given the task of creating a robot that would drive a course. They had to work together to choose a design, run trials, evaluate to make adjustments to perfect their final design and programming, and do all of this while sticking to a budget based on an imaginary cost of each brick and component. Each team gave a formal presentation in front of a group of judges who were blown away by how much they had learned and been able to apply to a real world project in such a short time. Practical, hands-on experience with technology goes a long way to awaken curiosity and develop critical thinking as well as valuable technical skills that will serve them well in future studies and employment.

-Soccer Game with Former Graduates

To close the 2024 soccer season, Project Moses boys had a friendly game against former program alumni that gave them a chance to fellowship with previous graduates. It was great to see the lasting relationships that the alumni developed during their time at the Project and to bring them all back together to do the thing they originally bonded over—playing soccer.

-Year End Closing Ceremony

Thursday, November 21st was the closing of the 2024 school year. The closing event was an opportunity to remember the triumphs of the year and give recognition for the hard work of the boys. It was also a chance to present awards for exemplary performance and conduct. There were three awards that have been a part of Project Moses tradition and were given in recognition of their commitment. The “Spirit of Overcoming” award was given to Maynor, an 8th grader that just finished his 2nd year at Project. This award is given to a youth that demonstrates commitment and endurance seeking self-improvement. Maynor entered the 2023 school year with minimal reading and writing ability and he has now ended the 2024 year with exceptional grades and the highest average amongst underclassmen. Next Danny was presented with the “Commitment of Iron” award. This award is given following the Proverbs 27:17 description of iron sharpening iron. The goal this year was to create a community of boys dedicated to the improvement and devotion towards our community and Danny demonstrated his commitment by being willing to say the hard things and lovingly correct his peers. Lastly the Project boys voted on one student who they thought was exemplified the characteristics of a “Man of Moses”. As an opportunity to call to attention the good character of a peer, the boys were quick to nominate Jairo, who is a friend to all.

The closing event was also an opportunity to give thanks for the time, effort, and commitment of our two graduating students. David and Darlin will be sorely missed. Their example and leadership were crucial to the success of the 2024 school year. We are so proud of their accomplishments and ask that you pray for their bright futures as they move on from being a student of Project Moses.

-Induction Week

For the 2025 year, Project Moses has the goal to grow to 24 students, which gave us 8 spots available to find candidates for our admissions process. Beginning in October, Tyler and Francis organized visits to new communities to give presentations about the project. Friendly soccer games where also coordinated with the region of Belen and La Campa to reach families where the Project already has exposure. The candidates came to the Project in the second week in November to have interviews and take academic aptitude tests. The final step in the admissions process was a trial week for the 10 finalists to come to the Project and experience the dorm life and activities for themselves. This gives them a hands-on time where their desire and motivation to get ahead could be put on display. In the end, 8 boys went home with acceptance letters. Tyler and Francis are busy making plans and preparations for the 2025 school year and are excited to make even more inroads in developing strong future leaders.
