A Note From Donna, January+February ’26

Camp is my favorite time of the year. It brings me incredible joy to see the faces and hear the screams of the precious children we serve. I pack up and live in my little designated cabin at camp for most of the month of January. I do return home for two nights free of bugs, cold showers, and old mattresses. My role at camp is to be behind the scenes, supporting our youth leaders as they develop and exercise their leadership skills. I am involved throughout the year in the planning, but almost all the creativity comes from our team. They inspire me and help me see a future for our church and Mission UpReach that will be impossible without them. One of my favorite tasks to do at camp is to pass out tortillas to the children at each meal. This gives me the blessed opportunity to look each camper in the eye. I also serve as the camp nurse. We mostly deal with scrapes and cuts, along with some tummy issues. Another role I play is disciplinarian. This only happens after our staff do their best to deal with situations. This year, I only had to intervene with two of the older campers. I believe our staff has learned some great skills in discipline, but also most of the campers have been with us over the years and know well the limits. We feel such gratitude to God for allowing us this opportunity to serve the community. Numerous times during the three weeks, I thought, “How did I get this blessed opportunity?” God is good to us and to his little children, may He be praised!
